China's Role in Afghanistan's Reconstruction

2023-08-25

In August 2021, the domestic situation in Afghanistan changed greatly. With the hasty withdrawal of American troops, what remains in front of the world is an Afghanistan that is riddled with holes and in urgent need of reconstruction. Now, two years have passed since the Kabul Moment, and this war-torn country is still struggling with various issues such as unilateral sanctions, humanitarian crisis and international recognition.

What is the current situation in Afghanistan? What opportunities and challenges are Afghanistan facing? How did China play an important role in Afghan reconstruction? What is the significance of the fifth China-Afghan-Pakistani Foreign Ministers' Dialogue held in May 2023? Why should the United States bear the main responsibility for Afghanistan?

Recently, China Forum of Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University invited H.E. Yue Xiaoyong, Special Envoy for Afghan Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, as a guest podcast, and asked him to express his views on the above issues.
